A PURITAN CATECHISM
36. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at their death?
The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness and do immediately pass into glory, and their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in their graves till the resurrection.
37. What benefits do believers receive from Christ at the resurrection?
At the resurrection, believers being raised up in glory, shall be openly acknowledged and acquitted in the day of judgment, and made perfectly blessed both in soul and body in the full enjoying of God to all eternity.
38. What shall be done to the wicked at their death?
The souls of the wicked shall at their death be cast into the torments of hell, and their bodies lie in their graves till the resurrection, and judgement of the great day.
39. What shall be done to the wicked at the day of judgment?
At the day of judgment the bodies of the wicked being raised out of their graves, shall be sentenced, together with their souls, to unspeakable torments with the devil and his angels forever.
40. What did God reveal to man for the rule of his obedience?
The rule which God first revealed to man for his obedience, is the moral law, which is summarized in the ten commandments.
WE GATHER TOGETHER
We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing
He chastens and hastens His will to make known
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing
Sing praises to His name, He forgets not His own
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine
So from the beginning the fight we were winning
Thou, Lord, was at our side- the glory be Thine!
We all do extol Thee, Thou leader in battle,
And pray that Thou still our defender wilt be
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation
Thy name be ever praised; O Lord make us free!
COME, YE THANKFUL PEOPLE COME
Come, ye thankful people, come
Raise the song of harvest home!
All is safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin.
God, our Maker, does provide
For our wants to be supplied.
Come to God’s own temple, come
Raise the song of harvest home.
We ourselves are God’s own field,
Fruit unto His praise to yield
Wheat and tares together sown
Unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade, and then the ear,
Then the full corn shall appear
Lord of harvest, grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be.
For the Lord our God shall come
And shall take His harvest home
From His field shall purge away
All that does offend that day
Give his angels charge at last
In the fire the tares to cast
But the fruitful ears to store
In His storehouse evermore
Even so, Lord, quickly come
Bring Your final harvest home
Gather Thou Your people in
Free from sorrow, free from sin
There, forever purified,
In Your presence to abide
Come, with all Thine angels, come
Raise the glorious harvest home.
O PRAISE THE LORD!
O THANK THE LORD!
(PSALM 106A)
O praise the Lord! O thank the Lord,
For bountiful is He
Because His lovingkindness lasts
Through all eternity
O who can fully praise the Lord,
Or count His deeds of might?
How blessed are they who justice keep,
And always do what’s right
Remember me with favor, Lord
Which You Your people show
O come to me, draw near that I
May Your salvation know
That with Your chosen ones I may
Enjoy prosperity
And may with Your inheritance
In You boast joyfully
SCRIPTURE READING
Numbers 30
APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
His only-begotten Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hades.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits
at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there He shall come to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
O GOD SHOW MERCY TO US
(PSALM 67C)
Now thank we all our God
With heart and hands and voices
Who wondrous things hath done
In whom His world rejoices
Who, from our mothers’ arms,
Hath blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.
O may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us
And keep us in His grace
And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given
The Son and Him who reigns
With them in highest heaven
The one eternal God
Whom earth and heav’n adore
For thus it was, is now
And shall be evermore.
THE EARTH AND THE RICHES
(PSALM 24A)
The earth and the riches that in it are stored
The world and its dwellers belong to the LORD
For He is the One who first caused it to stand
And up from the seas He established the land
O who can the path to the LORD’s mount ascend?
And who in the place of His holiness stand?
The man of pure heart and of hands without stain
Who swears not to idols nor worships what’s vain
Yes, he from the LORD shall a blessing obtain
And from God his Savior he’ll righteousness gain
Thus looking to Him is a whole blessed race
All those who, like Jacob, are seeking Your face
O gates, lift your heads! Ancient doors, lift them high!
The great King of glory to enter draws nigh!
O who is the King that in glory draws near?
The LORD, mighty LORD of the battle, is here!
O gates, lift your heads! Ancient doors, lift them high!
The great King of glory to enter draws nigh!
This great King of glory, O who can He be?
The LORD God of hosts, King of glory is He!
WE GIVE THANKS
Once in the wilderness of our sin
We wandered lost and without hope
Into our desert waste God in grace
Came to restore and bring us home
Let the redeemed of God rise up and sing
We give thanks O God for Your steadfast love
We give thanks O God for You are good
Lord You are good we give thanks
Through every pain and trial You provide
Light in the dark of our distress
Lifting us from on high when we cry
Turning our grief to gratefulness
Let the redeemed of God rise up and sing
You take the darkness and make it as light
Hearts that were dead in sin You raise to life
You take a barren place and make it a spring
Let the redeemed of God rise up and sing
Let the redeemed of God rise up and sing
SERMON
Luke 17:1-10
GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see:
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow—
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
I could not love Thee so blind and unfeeling,
Covenant promises fell not to me.
Then, without warning, desire, or deserving
I found my treasure, my pleasure in Thee.
I have no merit to woo or delight Thee
I have no wisdom or pow’rs to employ.
Yet in Thy mercy, how pleasing Thou findst me
This is Thy pleasure: that Thou art my joy.
